Change Must Happen at Home First

Until rappers and other African Americans began to respect and uphold their own race, no one else will take us serious. Words hurt! It is true that sticks and stones will break your bones but the part about, but words will never hurt is untrue. It saddens my soul when I see young girls dancing to the beats of humiliating words about themselves and when questioned they say things like:

I like the beat of the music not the words
They are not talking about me

Well if they are not talking about African American women who are they talking about?
Snoops’ remarks were plain stupid. Until we make a change as a people, how can you really expect folks like Imus, and others who utter downgrading remarks about African American women to zip it? Stop listening to rappers who say negative things about women period...

See story below:

Snoop Says Rappers And Imus Are 'Two Separate Things'; Talks New CompMC says radio host's racially inflammatory comments shouldn't be compared to rap lyrics;
The Big Squeeze due April 24.
By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Rahman

Snoop Dogg has issued a new warning: Don't dare to compare his lyrics — or any other MC's — to syndicated radio host Don Imus' recent racially inflammatory comments about the black women on the Rutgers University women's basketball team. Imus called them "nappy-headed ho's," among other insults.Admittedly, Snoop and some of his peers have called women "b----es" and "ho's" in their lyrics, but as the Dogg put it Tuesday afternoon (April 10), there is no parallel to what Imus said."It's a completely different scenario," said Snoop, barking over the phone from a hotel room in L.A. "[Rappers] are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We're talking about ho's that's in the 'hood that ain't doing sh--, that's trying to get a n---a for his money.

These are two separate things. First of all, we ain't no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC [which announced Wednesday it would drop its simulcast of Imus' radio show] going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them mutha----as say we in the same league as him."Snoop did say, though, that the media needs to treat Imus as it treats some MCs (or football players, even)."Kick him off the air forever," he said. "Ban him like they did [Adam] 'Pacman' Jones. They kicked him out the [National Football] League for the whole season [for numerous violations of the NFL's personal-conduct policy, including multiple arrests], but this punk gets to get on the air and call black women 'nappy-headed ho's.' His rant is a little misdirected don't you think miss Rose? Although I will say that Imus has been spewing these sorts of words since I was living in NYC and that was well over a decade ago.

Thing is, what he's said before was even worse than what he said about the Rutgers womens basketball team, and not a thing was mentioned about those words. Funny how things go down. But, Imus' firing had nothing to do with pressure from our leaders, from the stations, everyday people or anything like that.

Imus was taken down by the corporate infrastructure. When advertisers began dropping off one by one, Imus was history and in the sad end, THAT'S what took him down. Not us, not Reverend Sharpton, nothing but corporate pressure. If that didn't happen, Imus would have been on his 2 week suspension and back on the airwaves in no time. Everything, is backwards!

Grown, college-educated women have told me that it's okay because they are listening to the beat/bought the bootleg tape/insert sorry excuse of the moment here. A sad state of affairs indeed.

Thank GOD someone understood the parallels between their (Don and Snoops) ignorance and rap music! I was fit to be tied when this first started and actually called the station to complain. No one can expect to receive a dime of mine for degrading their own mothers, sisters and daughters.

Yes, we need to take responsibility for our own actions. We need to reverse the madness that is taking place within our society. We are free to our detriment. We need to dig back into the very depths of our culture and extract the common decency, consideration, pride and sense of community that we once had. We need to respect our women and stop referring to them as bitches and hoes. The list goes on, but It would really take an essay or book to get my point across. Perhaps I should do that. Anyway, thank you for this. Heaven help us all. Peace~

The entire issue is bigger than hip hop. People were racist and sexist before hip hop. People were derogatory to black women before hip hop. I like what Stanley Crouch said on Oprah about rappers being modern day minstrels. They are modern day minstrels, but we are laughing right along with it. However, who is the major consumer? White people. Stanley Crouch also said it was made for white people who want to go on an audio safari. I think the bigger corporate structure needs to be examined instead of the individual rapper.

If you don't want people to repeat what you say, don't say it. Once you put it out there as acceptable, it'll be used. This is something that bothers me about kids. Most of Charlie's friends are black or hispanic, and I've had to sever a few relationships over the years because the language they found acceptable and used (referring to their own ethnic origins), Charlie would use too. That wasn't going to happen. Disrespect isn't a joke, or an endearment.
