A mentor, author and Cheerleader!

As a publisher you are always looking for the next best writer. But for this publisher I also look for the book that will make a difference. In addition to looking for someone to help our teens you must find the person who is willing to take extra steps to get their message out in a way that will impact the lives of those who means the most to us, our children. Lydia is that person. Meet Lydia M. Douglas, author of Stepping Stones to Success.

Lydia is a fascinating person. She is a soft spoken professional but is very effective in working with teens. Much like the commercial, “when E.F. Hutton speaks, everyone listens,” the same holds true for this champion of children and teens.

Why is this lady making such a huge difference in the lives of teens? It is because she is passionate about education and wants all students to believe that they can accomplish all their dreams. It is also because teens are wise enough to know when someone is serious about the words they speak, they too will listen.

Each of us has had someone who made a difference in our lives, for me it was my mother and father. Who made the difference for you?

There is a gospel song that folks sing at churches called, 'May the work that I have done speak for me'. What work have you done to inspire a generation?

Not enough people try to do what you feel comes naturally.

My mom is my inspiration. Instead of staying in a bad marriage she left and started over. It was hard and she had to work twice as hard, but she made it. It taught me to never settle and that with hard work you can achieve anything.

Congratulations to you for acquiring such a needed manuscript! And best wishes to the author.

My inspiration early in life was my mother... She always stressed the importance of education. As I get older, I find that my friends inspire me, with their positive words and their actions. I think we don't really realize the powerful influence those that we interact with daily have on our thoughts, attitudes, and actions.

Have I inspired anyone? I inspire the younger members of my family. Also I remember, when doing post-doctorate work in New Orleans, doing some volunteer work for friends. They wanted me to go around to a few schools and give talks about what I did at the time (working with termites, chemisty etc.) I remember kids coming up to me afterwards and saying that they never thought that they could do something like that until I spoke to them.... Hopefully I inspired some during these times.

First and foremost, I have tried to be a good role model, listener and supporter of my own children. I have done the same for my children's friends. More importantly, I encourage my kids when they want to provide emotional support to their peers.

I don't see myself as "inspiring a generation." I'm just being a good parent and advocate for young people - something I'm supposed to do.

My father was my inspiration. And I called upon his wisdom early and often when dealing with teenagers. My greatest professional compliment came from a 17 year old gang member who informed me he was going to get his GED (after having dropped out at 13 to join the gang and live ... wherever) because I had helped him realize he really might live past 21 and that he had reason to actually *want* to live that long. After I smiled and said "I'm SO proud of you!" I went back to my office, closed the door and sobbed happy tears. Last I heard, he was taking classes at the local community college. Who knows if I've gotten through to any of the other kids I still call "my" kids, but I got through to that one and I will always be proud of him.

I grew up in the church so most of my early influences were the youth leaders at my church, but I would quickly single two of them out. Gregory and Sondra Browne. They took me under their wing and treated me like a son at a time in my life when I needed parental guidance (non-existant father and a mother who was working 2 jobs just to make ends meet). Who knows what kind of person I would be without them.

As far as what am I doing to inspire the next generation? I am passing on all of my "wisdom" to the youth at my church who are about to go through what I went through. Using my mistakes to show them what to look out for when they go to college and eventually enter the real world.

It figures that you would post about such an uplifting personality. She radiates exactly the kind of modest quality that you would like. If she's getting props from you, she's definitely worth checking out. Good looking out as well by revealing her to your readers. If I had to really think about who made a difference for me, I wouldn't have to look any further past my mom. She kept it together raising 5 children and making men out myself and my brother. No easy feat either. Nicely done as always Rose.

Hi Rose,
That does sound like it could make a difference. I deal with many adults who could have used such an intervention when they were teens!

Thank you for visiting my site and for leaving such a nice comment. I appreciate it and by all means do drop back if you think of anything else.

All the best,
Andrew

my parents pushed me to make something of my life...and along the way there have been many inspirational folks in my life.

I'd like to believe that getting a degree and moving away from home to start a life of my own has and will inspire my younger cousins. I want so much to express to them that they don't have to feel stuck or place limitations on their lives.

My Grandmother made a huge difference in my life.

If it were not for her presence in my life, I'd probably been dead a long time ago.

Definitely my parents; both of them inspired me for different roles of life!

I consider myself too minute to be able to make difference for a whole generation. In future, perhaps, I'd be able to it in some way...

Miz JJ: Your mom indeed showed great strength.

Bro. Buck:
thank you. Her book is doing well in schools and libraries.

LadyLee: Mothers have always been the back bone in the families and I know that you are proud to have your mom as your inspiration.

Deb: Whether you know it or not you inspire not only teens but adults in your writings.

Brooklyn Babe: thank you and we miss you.

BostonPobble: the greatest feeling is helping a teen who didn't think he could accomplish much or live to see anything good happen in his life. Thank you for helping him. If each of us helped one teen what a different that would make.

Dr. deb: I meet folks every single day and she is one that grabs you with words of wisdom. You can feel her devotion to teens and they know it...

Organized Noise: that is great what you are doing. Continue the support and one day your proteges will respond to someone about how you are their inspiration.

Luke:
You are too kind. I can tell your mother did a wonderful job with you. Through your writings I can tell you are a special individual yourself.

Dr. Andrew: you are making a difference in many lives with your valuable information.

Sarccastik:
That's all one can expect is that you try...you will be surprised at who is watching you and learning.

BrownSourl: All of us needed someone to move away from the bunch and excel. If it wasn't for my loving cousin I don't know if I would be as given. But I remember how every Christmas she came to every house with Christmas gifts and how we waited to see her and to see the beautiful gifts she bought us. I mean she spent all year trying to make sure everyone of her cousin got something special. There had to be at least 30 of us. That was the most wonderful feeling to know that your older cousin thought so much of you. It wasn't the gifts, it was the love she showed. I love her deeply 30 years later. Now I do the same thing to help my neices, cousins, their friends, etc. It only takes one Spark to get the fire burning.

Sounds great. It's good to have people who are still considered inspirations nowadays.
