Guns on Campus! What happened to the good old days?

It is a shame that you can’t send you child to college without violence following them there. Things have changed so much in this world. My daughter called to tell me that on this past Friday someone was shooting on the campus. They were put on lockdown until they found the culprit. To my knowledge they haven’t found the person. But my daughter told me that it could have been someone from the city or even the campus. She said that some students carried guns because the police department sent out letters saying that anyone who had them should turn them in without repercussions. Ain’t that something? Excuse my language! It was a blessing no one was hurt.

In my attempt to talk to my best friend to find solace since I didn’t want my daughter to know that I was worried, upset and wanted to drag her out of school, I found out that the same weekend it happened at her son’s college. Supposedly her son attended a party near the college grounds given by college students and some guys show up and start a fight and starts shooting. Her son had to jump over cars to get to safety.

It’s a darn shame that kids can’t go to college, get an education without fear and violence. My daughter said that basically the campus is safe. Her dorm is on the same lot as the huge satellite police department. I’ve called them twice when I could not reach her because her cell phone was messed up, and her room phone number had been changed that morning and the front desk at the dorm would not give me her phone number. Though I’m glad they don’t give the numbers out, I was pissed as a mother trying to reach her so I called the police and they got the number. Another time she was locked out of her room and the janitorial staff was at another site and the front office with the keys was mistakenly locked and I had to call the police to get her in her room. Students were working the desk until the dorm manager returned. They called the dorm manager and she promptly returned to campus. Why was it so important to get into her room? She was locked out after taking a shower and had on her robe and her friends were not around. She just happened to take her cell with her. Yeah I’ll call the cops in a minute!
I want the cops to know me and to know her!

But still! I’m sad that teens today can’t comfortably enjoy college like we did. Where did the good old days go?

Have mercy! That's crazy, but certainly not unheard of; as you know. I found out myself when I attended Norfolk State. For the most part, the campus was safe, but you have to take in the fact that not all personnel at school functions or parties are actual college students, so that's when things become a bit tricky. I'm just glad no one was hurt or killed. I can't say the same for the particular incident at NSU back in the day...glad I wasn't in attendance..glad to hear your daughter wasn't harmed.

It is scary. But I'm sure that when todays college kids are our age, they'll look back at now being the good ole' days and there'll be a whole new bag of worries for their kids.

I don't know where they went, but at least you are on speaking terms with the cops.

All I can say is, I'm so glad that I went to school when I did and that I was born in the decade that I was born in. Sure, it had its share of problems too, but since when was school a no-safe haven and a de-militarized zone. I weep for the children of our future. What did they do to deserve this. (smh)

*sigh* TTG for campus police. I Don't Want violence to become one of the extracurricular activities our kids can simply expect from college life.

I don't know what to say.
I'm glad to know your daughter is safe.
I think sometimes the location and size of the campus is part of the issue.

The school I went to was smaller than your average large high school and was located in rural New England.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you sent your daughter to the wrong school. I simply think that with a large population, there is greater diversity, and therefore a higher incidence of gun-toting inclinations.

When I went to college ( Spelman) we were given orientation about not being out alone, using self defense moves and basic campus security...Unfortunately, there were no mobile phones but thank goodness your daughter has one!

Thank goodness the angels were surrounding your daughter and she wasn't harmed. That is a parents worst nightmare isn't it? Let's just keep praying and being proactive with todays youth *got your email too*. This violence has to end soon, it makes no sense whatsoever. Glad you know all the #'s to get in contact with your daughter on campus too Rose. Passing that info on to my friends with kids on their way to college in a couple of years.

I'm concerned about what trouble will be prevalent when my daughter's much older. Will it be guns, drugs, sex crimes, or worse? I shudder at the thought of what could be. However, I stand firm that God will always protect and provide a way of escape for her!

I also wonder the same thing when I see such things on the news about violence in schools and colleges.

I hope they find the culprit at your daughter's college.

Things have changed. I don't remember the gun thing when I was in college, but I went to a community college, too. More adults there, so maybe less foolishness. I don't know.

I attended college in the late 1980s. I was too trusting. I was attacked by a casual acquaintance while I walked with a group to a party. I was thrown into some bushes, and he clamped his hand over my mouth. Thankfully, I freaked out and he let me go. I quickly learned that people I knew of were sometimes the most dangerous. I learned a lot about life in general. I'm sure your daughter knows enough to keep perfectly safe...but this is a good reminder you just can't let your guard down.

Oh, and bomb threats were pretty common back then, too, especially around final exam time!
