The Winners are:

Four African Americans won Pulitzer Prizes (probably a record number for one year). The winners are Natasha Trethewey for poetry, Cynthia Tucker of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for commentary, Ornette Coleman for music, and special award citation for another jazz saxophonist, John Coltrane.

Coltrane is someone I love to write poems about. This was one of the first poems I ever wrote.

My friend Edna Petty is a nationally known fabric and quilt artist. I used to write poems to go with her quilts.

Edna's words:
Coltrane (the Quilt is called Trane)TRANE ã 1997, 36”x52”, E.J.P.P.
The materials used are tie-dyed fabric as well as ethnic and commercial fabric and paint.
My husband is truly a jazz lover and when I created this quilt I called it “Take the A train”(there is a small blue train emerging from the image). He insisted that it should be called John Coltrane, recently it was on exhibit and a jazz buff said that it should be called “blue train/Trane” because Coltrane has a recording by that name. So it is just simply titled “Trane”.
Coltrane

When he picked up his saxophone and put it to his lips,
The music so smooth flowed from his toes to his narrow hips,
He played his music for all to hear and enjoy,
For both men and women he played for them like his sax was a toy.

Jazz was his game and Coltrane was his name,
He took his music seriously and that was his aim,
Playing the sax was his greatest claim to fame,
A great musical genius is what he became.

Wow. That is very IMPRESSIVE. Big ups to those fine folk who brought home that prestigious(sp) award. I've been wanting to do a Coltrane picture. I've got this incredible image in the back of my mind that one day I just hope to bring out.

Thanks Rose for that info. I learn something new again.

I also love Trane to the point where words just come out all syncopated and stuff.
