Passing the Torch to help Someone
More than 20 months ago a sister invited me to sit on her organizations’ board of directors. I was happy to do. As we began a relationship to help pregnant homeless teenagers, I became interested in starting my own non-profit organization to eliminate health disparities in low income families. I shared my interest with her. She showed me step by step how to become incorporated and federally approved as a charitable organization. She had one request in assisting me. That request was to help another woman/sister to start her own business. I promised I would.
My entire career has centered on helping people to become economically self sufficient through enrolling in school, learning an occupation, finding a job, home, transportation, etc. So this was not a hard request to keep.
As I met more women through workshops and just regular day to day interaction, I found that so many women desired to own their own companies but had no idea what to do. Three women sought me out to help them; two followed through and have new businesses. But what made me smile is when a mother whom I met several years ago with her own business called me to tell me that her husband left her for another woman took, all her money and her business was failing because he had basically ruined her. While she was growing her business, he was seeing another woman and shuffling her profits into another secret account. When she looked up all her profits were gone. This man that she trusted and had several kids by didn’t care what happened to his family. I sat with her and told her about an organization that would help her business, gave her the phone number, explained the application process and told her what to say, etc. I also told her to pray.
Today she ran up to me and hugged and thanked me for telling her that information. She got the loan to pay off all her business & personal bills and replenish her supplies for her business and all is well. That was in October when she came to me for help. She is no longer in debt and her business is back on track. That’s only two months.
Before she came to me she said she went to banks and everywhere and no one would help her because her credit was a mess from what her spouse had been during behind her back. I just happened to know of a Women's Business Center that would help. Today she had the biggest smile, and had gain some weight back. Stress had her below 115 pounds. She was absolutely beaming. She said you are my angel. I told her that was not true, that God did this, not me. Still I felt happy to continue to fulfill the promise that I made to the lady who helped me.
