Where are senior activities on the south side in Chicago?

Help! My aunt called me last night crying because she is so lonely. Even though she is married and have grown kids, she said sometimes she does not feel like living because she is so lonely. She is a senior citizen about 63, I think. She said that hubby works all day, and when he comes home, after 45 years of marriage, he eats and goes to bed. She said all she wants is someone to talk to.

I think people stop taking her calls because last summer she almost died on the operating table and they gave her too much morphine. Well, although she survived, it seems that she has a memory problem. She repeats the same conversation, revisits the same topics, and ask the same questions every time she talks to you.But I love her dearly. At this time in her life she should be a part of senior activities? Shopping with them, dancing with them, etc.

Does any one have any contact information so that I can contact a senior citizens' organization who could pick her up at least three times a week. Seniors hate to feel isolated and lonely? She lives on the south side about 15 minutes from downtown Chicago.

I have no info being from NYC but 63 is just on the cusp of senior citizenry. My Mom is about to be 62 and she is gone. I have to lie in wait to catch her.

Nowadays a 63 year old can count on living another 20-something years. So she has a lot to look forward to.

Does your Aunt attend church? Could she possibly volunteer or is she unable to get around well? Is she retired? Would she consider working if she's retired?

Check here ~ http://www.catholiccharities.net/services/senior_services/ This should take you to the Chicago link. I was looking specifically near the bottom of the page where the Meals on Wheels has sites that offer community meals at Senior Centers. Some of the centers I've worked with offer transportation to and from. There's also a referral site about mid-page (South Regional Senior Services) that might be helpful.

Finally, many colleges and universities have adopt-a-grandparent programs. I don't know if any of the schools there do or not but a call to their volunteer centers should answer that. Let us know what you find for her, okay? Please? Good luck! No one should be that lonely.

GC she does attend church which is her only release. She talked to the pastor's wife but does not want to burden her, who is much younger. She doesn't drive or have ever had a job so she has never made many friends. I am going to do all I can to help her. Thank you!
