It is not what you say, but how you say it!

When my daughter was attending Lutheran School from 5th -8th grade, we received a letter from the school asking parents not to allow their children to play with the Pokemon cards.
Supposedly there were hidden messages of witchcraft and other things that the Bible speaks against. My daughter never took to the cards and I never bought them or paid much attention to them. Then when Harry Potter came out I heard many of the same things about hidden subliminal messages about witches and globins, things that Bible speaks against and things I don’t believe in.

The other day I heard the J.K. Rowling, author of Harry Potter state that one of her characters was gay. I’m thinking what the hell and why on earth would she say that knowing her readers are so young. Now I am really thinking what is the point, why say this now, what are you trying to convey or better yet, what are your intentions? I understand why parents should be careful about what children read. It is the hidden messages. I’m talking about the witches, globins and sorcerers. I am not racist or prejudiced against gay people. I love them the same as I do everyone else. The issue is not about being gay to me. It is about subliminal messages. My question is who cares that Albus Dumbledore, beloved elderly headmaster of Hogwarts boarding school, was, in fact, a homosexual. I don’t but I’m sure that many parents had to explain to their young child that is, if they heard the announcement.

I have never read her books. But if this information was announced in her writing about Albus, I would think that writing around tolerance and love for this character would have been a great story line. But who am I, certainly not this successfully writer who in a short time went from the welfare roll to billionaire status by writing these books and securing a huge audience. To me it is not about being gay it is about messages and how they are conveyed.

She's generating more buzz about her Harry Potter books, which I might add, were spun off from someone else's Larry Potter children's books which have been out of print. My only question: Doesn't she have enough money already?

My husband and I were asking each other why that announcement was made when it was made because we really did not understand, but I guess it was to attract attention. It's kind of sad because she has more money than the queen.

Hm...my thoughts on this may differ from others...

The way I heard it was that in the script for the next movie, there was a reference to a woman from Dumbledore's past. Rowling had never intended to out him but couldn't let that slide and stay true to her characters. As an author myself, I can totally respect that.

It has no importance unless she made repeated references to his sexual orientation throughout her books, even subliminally.

As a parent, you must be on top of your child's influences, even if the majority blesses them.

Wow luv! I just wrote a post about the latter part of your post regarding JK Rowling and the whole revealing one of her characters as gay. Different tempo than what you have here, but I'm interested in what you think regarding the rest of my post. Happy Halloween miss Rosey! :)

I'd like to see a writer reveal that a character is deaf.
Or Greek. No offense Greek people. I just don't see how a character being gay is something to reveal.
