What is Sushi?

Sushi as I am told is a specific style of Japanese cuisine that combines vinegar seasoned rice with a variety of seafood and vegetables. The word "sushi" actually means "vinegar rice." "Su" is the Japanese word for vinegar and "Shi" is an abbreviation of the word "Meshi," a colloquial name for cooked rice.

Most people in America believe that sushi is all raw fish but that is not the case, it is not. Although some sushi combinations use raw fish, there are many others that use an array of ingredients ranging from cooked fish to vegetables. What you add to it is your choice and is only limited by your imagination as explained to me.

Unfortunately I do not like this food. I have tried it on more than one occasion at several different restaurants and the results are the same- I do not like sushi. Why is there such a rage about sushi?

I don't get it either Rose. LOL. It is like sticky rice, which I hate, and some icky undone fish. LOL. Why are the nastiest things called delicacies and revered? Like caviar. LOL.

I love it! California maki is my favorite which is pretty basic. It's crab (cooked) and veggies rolled in the rice and I find it to be delicious. I have tried other types like nigiri as well but the California maki is my favorite.

The only thing I don't like about sushi is being forced to eat it with slippery little sticks!

I'm a typical American. If it doesn't look appetizing, forget about it. If you're serving sushi, count me out!

It took me a long time to try it, but a couple of friends finally dragged me about 2 years ago. Now I love it. I don't eat anything raw, but I love most cooked rolls like shrimp tempura, california, or salmon skin. I think it's definitely an acquired taste that you either love or hate.

I think it was a big fad in the 80s or something. The whole embracing of everything japanese thing. Now, it's really widespread. I like most sushi, but I can't get with the whole adding of other flavors like chipotle. Thats nasty.

I'm a huge fan. My boyfriend turned me on to it a few years ago and I just love it.

Charlie, my 16 year old, loves sushi. Casey and I hate it...not sure hate is a strong enough word to describe how much we don't like it. Since Charlie loves it so much, we've tried it several times (ewwww, but support the ones you love and all that) but it's honestly the nastiest stuff ever. Again...eeewwwwww.

I love sushi! I admit that I wasn't in a hurry to try it the first time I had it. But when a dear friend asked me to accompany her to a sushi bar, I agreed, in part because I love other Japanese cuisine. I quickly learned to love sushi.

The California roll is one of my favorites. Also, whenever my friend and I visit a sushi restaurant, we often order a dish known as "the caterpillar". Green sushi rolls are formed to look just like a caterpillar. The dish even has "eyes" and "antennae". It is too cute!
